Network Ireland West Cork will hold a ‘Sleepout in Sherkin’ in aid of Cork Simon Community on October 5, 2019. 10 local businesswomen will sleep in Sherkin for the night to help raise awareness of homelessness in West Cork and €15,000 by the end of 2019.
Speaking ahead of the sleepout, Ciara Byrne, President of Network Ireland West Cork, said: “I am honored to be in a position to be able to fundraise for Cork Simon. For one night we are giving up the luxuries of our beds and swapping it for a sleeping bag on the ground of Sherkin Island. Homeless people have to experience this every night. This will be a great way to understand some of the realities that homeless people face, while also raising money and awareness to help Cork Simon Community fight homelessness. Homelessness is an invisible problem in West Cork and hopefully we can raise awareness and funds for this incredible organisation. We would like to thank the people of Sherkin Island for supporting our fundraising efforts and are doing a soup run on the night. If you would like to donate, please do so here.”
Dermot Kavanagh, Director of Cork Simon Community, said: “The number of men, women and children stuck in emergency accommodation in Cork city and county increased by an alarming 27% in the 12 months to June 2019. The Network West Cork Sleep-Out, planned for October, is a way for the West Cork community to show how much it cares about every person experiencing homelessness here in Cork – and that it’s ready and willing to do something about it. We are working hard to end homelessness for every person knocking on our door – that’s only possible with the support, understanding and creative fundraising initiatives of groups like Network West Cork, for which we are most grateful.”
