The quote “You have the same number of hours in the day as Beyoncé” is often seen on social media. No doubt, its popularity is down to this quote’s power to give us perspective. We live in a busy world, where how busy we are is often used as a barometer of success. If we take a step back, it’s helpful to recognise the common ground that we all share, even Beyoncé, that we are part of a wider team that leads to our success, rather than striking out alone as individuals.
There is no “I” in “Team”
While I sometimes have a natural tendency to self-direct and operate independently rather than delegate and collaborate, I have consciously moved towards a team mentality. Simply put, “two heads are better than one” or “a problem shared is a problem halved”. This way of working is central to the success of our team at AM O’Sullivan PR as our skillsets, personalities and expertise are different but, at the same time, we complement each other enabling us to provide a well-rounded service to our clients.
I often ask myself “is this the most valuable use of my time.” At a Network Ireland West Cork event a few months ago, Sarah Leather, Business Coach and Mindset Mentor, spoke about the power of saying “No” (Read more here). Speaking of networking, this is something that I place far greater value on than I might have in previous years. Increasingly, I find the experience of being surrounded by positive, like-minded people to be energising and empowering. Particularly through my engagement with Network Ireland West Cork, I appreciate the atmosphere of positivity, with members supporting each other and wanting each other to succeed. The saying “if you want to get a job done, ask a busy person”, rings true for our group, but, again, no one is doing it alone and we have a very hands-on committee.
If you find that you’re too busy, are you are surrounding yourself with the right people and, more importantly, are you asking for their help? They could have the ability and willingness to lighten your workload.
